Red Square+Mausoleum+St. Basil Cathedral
Walking tour along the Square which was laid out in the 15th century. Until the middle of the 17th century Red Square was known as "Pozhar", i.e. a place destroyed by a fire. The name "Red" (or "krasnaya", which meant "beautiful" in old Russian) arose in the mid-17th century. The chief architectural detail of the square was the Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat, which the people renamed the Cathedral of St.Basil the Blessed.to. This square is the real witness of a dramatic Russian history. The Victory Parade to celebrate the defeat of Hitler Germany was held on here on June 24,1945. The Mausoleum was built in 1924 by special government decree and then it was wooden. Now the sarcophagus with Lenin’s body is in a tomb built of dark-red granite and black labradorite in 1930 to the design of the architect A.Schusev. On each side of the Mausoleum in the Kremlin wall many great men of the Soviet Union and several foreigners, John Reed and A.R.Williams among them, are buried.
