Siberian Snowmobile Adventure

SIBERIAN SNOWMOBILE ADVENTURE

 18 February - 02 March 2017

This 14-day Adventure begins with a round-trip flight to Moscow. Although the trip includes tours of the most interesting attractions in Moscow, the real excitement begins after a 5-hour flight deep into Russia at Irkutsk in Eastern Siberia.ur Adventurers will enjoy the quiet and remote beauty of one of nature’s most stunning lakes and forest areas. Lake Baikal, one of the major features of this journey, is one of the most interesting bodies of water in the world. Baikal is the oldest and deepest lake in the world and it contains 20% of the world’s unfrozen fresh water.

Day 1. Arrival in Moscow
We will meet your flight and provide transportation to the hotel near Red Square and the Kremlin in downtown Moscow. We will have a welcome reception in the evening where you will meet your hosts and fellow adventurers. Before dinner, we will have an orientation meeting to review the activities of the next two weeks. We will have our first group dinner at an authentic Russian restaurant.

Day 2. Free day in Moscow
Your free day in Moscow will provide an opportunity to shake off jet lag and explore the city. In the evening transfer to the airport, flight to Irkutsk (5 hours).

Day 3. Arrivel in Irkutsk
We arrive in Irkutsk and travel to our resort hotel, 40 miles away on the shores of Lake Baikal, in the small resort community of Listvyanka. From your room, you will see the icy lake surrounded by beautiful mountains. After lunch at a cozy place you will receive snowmobile instructions and will take your first ride in the surrounding area.
Day 4. Listvyanka-Baguldeyka
We start our journey by Hivus – hovercraft, easily overcoming kilometers of Baikal ice. The speed depends on the weather, wind and ice condition, but it can move 70-80 km per hour.Following the coast line we’ll enjoy the scenic rocky cliffs, ice-floes and ice grottos. We'll soon see the nice wooden church of BolshoeGoloustnye village where we’ll stop for lunch.Today we can experience the dog-sledding. Or if you take your ice-skates you can skate at the deepest ice-skating rink in the world! The ice in some places is so smooth! And we’ll certainly spend some time lying and gazing at the stones (or fish if we are lucky) under transparent ice. We also have the chance to stop at Peschannaya Bay to see the “walking trees”. When we arrive to Buguldeika village, we'll have a short ride to Talovskoye hotel with cozy wooden houses - the center of Hunting. It’s likely that we’ll have deer for dinner.

Day 5. Baguldeika- Hadatra(Small Sea)
The real adventure will start today! We will ride the quads and will go to Tazheranskay steppe – a unique natural complex with hills, steppes, lonely rocks, caves and lakes. It’s barely covered with snow even in winter as the winds blow it away. The Tazheransky solid mass was formed about 300-400 million years ago, and it’s one of the most interesting geological place in the Baikal area. Uplands and rocks, lakes and steppes give to the Tazheranskaya steppe a very scenic and exotic aspect. On the way we’ll make a stop at the marble quarry –a pit with smooth, tending downwards, blue and white monolithic walls. The sacral center and the sacred shamanic place of the Tazheranskaya steppe is considered to be Erd Mountain where we’ll meet a shaman and have lunch in a Ger.We’ll stay in a hotel in the bay which is called Maloye More (Small Sea).

Day 6. Hadatra (Small sea)-Kocherikovo
Today we’ll explore some unique places in the region of the Small Sea by snowmobiles. You will see the incredible iced grottoes and frozen rocks. They are especially beautiful once the sun touches them and they sparkle. We’ll visit Olkhon Island - the biggest island on Baikal lake, which was originally inhabited by Buryat people (one of Native people of Baikal who are Mongolian physical type). The island is home to Buddhist and Shamanistic shrines. We’ll also stop at Shamanka Rock – a favorite stop on Lake Baikal. From time immemorial the rock has been considered a sacred place, inhabited by the spirits of the island. After lunch we’ll leave the Small Sea and ride on Big Baikal. From here we will enter the wilderness where we will only occasionally find hunting cabins. We’ll stay for the night in the remote wooden houses, new and clean, but the facilities are outside.

Day 7. Kocherikovo-Cape Katelnikovskiy
Interesting and beautiful day for snowmobile riding! You will try riding on different surface. Sometimes ice can be black and transparent, which gives a strange feeling of riding over the water.Or we may meet the fields of hummocked ice, depending on the ice regime which differs every year. You will see that we’ll have more snow while riding further to the north. Take your time listening to Baikal breath shooting sometimes creating new cracks in its ice shield. Lunch on the ice. We’ll hardly meet any people here accept some fishermen or hunters. These places are hidden from tourists. And it makes it even more incredibleto find a comfortable hotel with openhot water swimming-pool. The hotel is a reward after a long and tough riding day.
Day 8. Cape Katelnikovskiy
Free Day. You can either spend the day in the hotel, relaxing and swimming in the natural hot swimming pools. Or we recommend visiting fishermen camp to see ice-fishing. In the afternoon we’ll enjoy an authentic Russian barbecue and have fresh fish from Lake Baikal.

Day 9. Cape Katelnikovskiy-Davsha
Today we cross the lake by snowmobiles. We head to Davsha – village of seven people on the shore of Baikal lake. It’s also theadministrative center of the Barguzinsky State Nature Reservethe oldest state reserve in Russia. The main reason to create the reserve here was a dramatic decline in population of the fur-bearing animals, in particular, sables. To prevent total disappearance of these animals the government issued a decree to make this area protected. We’ll meet the gamekeeper and his family who will provide shelter for the overnight. Barbeque in the evening.
Day 10. Cape Davsha-Civyrkuisky Bay/ Ust-Barguzin
After breakfast we’ll visit the local museum. The game keeper can take us to the woods for the short loop by the hunting skis. He will tell us about the famous Siberian sables and the brown bears – the native habitants of the area. We’ll continue our riding in the afternoon. If we are lucky we can meet nerpa - the world's only exclusively freshwater seal. They usually spend winter under ice or often they are well hidden by snow-drifts or ice hummocks. We’ll spend the night in the authentic native Gers erected on the ice. There are small holes in the floor of the gers. So you can do fishing staying in the bed. Be ready that the unique experience causes lack of facilities. Enjoy watching stars which are incredible at the open sky among the icy desert! We also have an option to spend the night in the simple guest houses in UstBarguzin. It will add 60 km to our route.
Day 11. Civyrkuisky Bay/ Ust-Barguzin-Hadatra (Small Sea)
Today is the final riding day! We’ll cross Baikal Lakein its central part and will be close to its deepest place (1637m). Before we reach the familiar hotel we’ll make several stops to admire the beautiful landscape. We’ll have another look at Olkhon Island, this time from the side of Big Baikal. On arrival you’ll have time to relax and get ready for dinner in the comfortable rooms of the hotel.
